Many artists fell in love with the village

Albert ROUSSEL (1869 – 1937)

In 1922 the musician bought a house at Vasterival.
He is buried in the village churchyard.

Eugène ISABEY (1803 – 1886)

The painter lived in a small thatched cottage next to the church.


They described the churchyard as one of the most beautiful places on earth.
In 1940, they lived at the Villa Sainte Cecile opposite the Manoir d’Ango.

Camille PISSARO (1830 – 1903)

In 1900 he produced seven paintings at Varengeville.

Georges BRAQUE (1882 – 1963)

Georges Braque painted at Varengeville. From 1931 onwards he lived in the village and welcomed many friends here including CALDER, MIRO, UBAC and CHAR. He is buried in the churchyard.

Claude MONET (1840 – 1926)

In 1882 he painted the church in Varengeville
and the “Customs Officers’ Cabin” at different times of the day.

Raoult CAMUSET (1890 – 1979)

He lived at the « Sylphes »

André BRETON (1896 – 1966)

In August 1927, he wrote “Nadja” whilst staying at the Manoir d’Ango.

Georges de PORTO-RICHE (1849 – 1930)

Dramatist and poet, he was elected to the French Academy.

Jean MIRO (1893 – 1983)

From 1930-1940 he stayed at the “Clos des Sansonnets” on the road to the church.

Victor BRAUNER (1903 – 1966)

He was a Dadaist and Surrealist painter.

Jean-François AUBURTIN (1866 – 1930)

In 1895 he painted the cliffs of the “Alabaster Coast”.

Raoul UBAC (1910 – 1985)

He designed the stained glass windows for the church at Varengeville and at St Paul de Vence.
